SCS Girl's Basketball green
sign installed
Congratulations to our
Girl's Basketball Team for winning First Place in the 2008 State
Championship 7A Tournament. The Lady Wildcats’ awesome accomplishment is
displayed on an Illinois Department of Transportation Championship Road
Sign on West Jefferson Street near Veterans Parkway.
A second state champion
road sign will be installed at another location yet to be determined.
This is the fifth set of “green signs” SCS athletes have earned.
SCS wins Division
Sportsmanship Award
On May 18, the IESA
announced the recipients of the 2008-2009 Division Sportsmanship Awards.
This award is only given to 17 schools out of the 730 member schools in
Illinois. We were chosen by the Athletic Directors/
Administrators of the other schools in “Division M” to receive this
honor. When making their choices, athletic directors and administrators
were asked to evaluate the schools in their division based on how that
school exemplifies all around good behavior indicative of good citizens
and good sports. They are encouraged to look at the entire school
community, athletes, coaches and fans. In addition to sportsmanship
criteria, a school must be involved in at least 50% of the activities
offered by the IESA. Any school that has had a player, coach or fan
ejected from a game or competition is automatically ineligible for
consideration. During the month of May, the IESA posts the name of each
eligible school for voting consideration among their Division. Our
division, “Division M,” is made up of 52 schools and includes all public
and parochial schools in Sangamon, Morgan, Scott, Pike, Calhoun and
Greene counties.
Our teams were blessed
with much success this year. In my 22 years as athletic director, I
have not seen a year with more excitement, championship titles and
post-season play. Receiving this award on top of an already amazing year
is quite humbling. My desire throughout the years for our school has
remained the same: When people think of Springfield Christian, I not
only want them to think of our strong competitive teams, but also our
humility, Christ-like attitude and outstanding sportsmanship. Going the
extra “good sportsmanship” mile has always been important to me as
athletic director of our school. I am very proud of our coaches,
athletes and parents for stepping up to make a difference in the arena
of sportsmanship. Springfield Christian needs to be different because we
are different!
This summer, SCS will
receive a certificate to display in our school office as well as a
banner to hang in our gym.
Blessings, Ms.
Monica Jones
